Geometry and Algebra

Algebra

The Algebra team of our Department deals with themes of Noncommutative Algebra and Algebraic Combinatorics - characterized by a high degree of interconnection – and with their implications and applications of a geometric nature.

More specifically, there are interest and intense activity within Lie Theory, Algebraic Theory of Invariants (with special attention to constructive/combinatorial methods), Supergeometry and Superalgebra, Combinatorics of posets, Group Theory.

The ideas and typical themes of Representation Theory provide the main methodological frame, common to the previously mentioned activities.

Geometry

The name “Geometry” traditionally includes very heterogeneous branches, which are all rooted in Classical Geometry, but got developed with different techniques and viewpoints.

In our Department various areas are represented: General and Geometric Topology, Real Differential Geometry, Complex Geometry, Algebraic Geometry and Combinatorial Geometry; the boundaries of these areas are all but sharp; in fact, there are frequent cross-fertilizations with other parts of Mathematics, particularly with Algebra. There are also developments toward applications.
